5 Memorable Moments from the 2016 GRAMMYs

Here's what you missed from music's biggest night

1. Kendrick Lamar Steals the Show
Kendrick Lamar dominated 2015 with his critical smash To Pimp A Butterfly, and while it lost out in all the major categories, he won over the crowd with the performance of the night. Surrounded by steel chains and prison cells, the politically charged iconography of his music came to visual life on stage. As he furiously rapped his way through "The Blacker the Berry," "Alright" and an untitled new song, a bonfire blazed behind him. It was impossible to look away, forcing us to confront the present-day impact of America's racialized past, and the star of hip-hop's future who brought it alive.

2. Taylor Swift Calls Out Kanye
Opening the show with a rousing rendition of "Out of Woods," Taylor Swift took a victory lap towards the close of the night, as 1989 won Album of the Year. However, it wasn't her performance or award that garnered our attention - it was her acceptance speech. "There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame," said Swift. It was a not-so-thinly veiled dig at Kanye West who perhaps attempted both with his now infamous lyrics released earlier that week. You know the ones.

3. Lady Gaga Takes on Bowie
Among the slew of tributes acts including Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper's dad-rock ode to Motörhead, and Bonnie Raitt, Chris Stapleton and Gary Clark Jr.'s bluesy tribute to B.B. King, Lady Gaga's David Bowie medley was by far the most polarizing of the night. While some admired her energy and enthusiasm, others found her intensity manic and jarring. Gaga crammed nearly a dozen Bowie jams in under seven-minutes with the eagerness of the new kid at theater camp. Regardless of your opinion of Gaga herself, at least she had fun with it and also guaranteed that younger generations will be looking up the originals up on YouTube for the weeks to come.

4. Justin Bieber Endures
That Justin Bieber managed not only to survive adolescence, but come out stronger despite the madness that comes with teen idol-hood, (Remember when he lost custody of a monkey in Germany? Or when he mooned the Mayan ruins? He's totally sorry for all that.) is remarkable. Justin's team up with producers Skrillex and Diplo for "Where Are U Now" has clearly paid off because the 21-year-old singer managed to win his first ever GRAMMY this year. And it showed in their affable performance, even if that leopard jacket and backward baseball cap he was sporting had him channeling his inner Fresh Prince.

5. Adele Has an Off Night
If Adele's performance reassured us of one thing, it's that even the most powerhouse songstresses have off-days. Between the falling microphones, cut sound and flat vocals, a lot of technical glitches marred the singer's take on 25 ballad "All I Ask." Adele did the best she could despite the circumstances, tweeting an explanation and consoling herself with fast food as a proper diva should.
